Britain's Anthony Joshua will defend his IBF and WBA heavyweight world titles against Carlos Takam on Saturday at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

It will be Joshua's first fight since stopping Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in April, adding the WBA title to the IBF belt he claimed in 2016.

Joshua was due to fight Kubrat Pulev but the Bulgarian pulled out with a shoulder injury.

That meant 36-year-old Cameroon-born Takam, the IBF's mandatory challenger who is based in France, was drafted in for the biggest fight of his career.

Takam vs Joshua prize money: How much will Anthony Joshua earn in Cardiff?

ANTHONY JOSHUA will put both of his world titles on the line against Carlos Takam on Saturday night and will be in for a hefty payday for doing so.

Joshua had been preparing to face Kubrat Pulev until last week when the Bulgarian suffered a shoulder injury.

But he hinted at the amount of money he was walking away from, claiming that other fighters would just have turned up lame for the pay cheque.

“It wasn’t easy for me to make that decision,” Pulev said.

“I know, in my place, almost everyone would choose to get into the ring in Cardiff, despite everything, and collect a few million.

“I can beat Joshua but I can’t beat him if I’m injured.”

Express Sport understands the fight would have been worth around £4million to Pulev - and it seems natural that Takam would get a similar share of the £20m purse.

Joshua is expected to take the rest which would be more than he made from the 11th-round knockout of Wladimir Klitschko earlier this year, due to the superior share the champion will have over Takam.

But the Brit is determined to remain humble and still lives with his mother.
After Joshua’s last fight, the heavyweight champion insisted he would not let fame and fortune affect him, instead promising to pay an outstanding bill at his local laundrette.

"I've got to pay my debt there, number one,” Joshua said.

“I’ve got a bill like that big [gesturing with his thumb and forefinger on his left hand]. Hopefully he'll swerve it.

"I'm a people's person, on the estate, there was loads of us anyway so it's pretty chilled.

“Everyone in the arena, I probably know 20,000 of these people. It's crazy, I'm a local boy. So it's no different, it's no problem.

“As long as I'm not late for training I don't mind the attention."

But the owner of his laundrette, Muqeem Bakhtari, revealed earlier this year in an interview with the Independent that Joshua has always been interested in money.

"I remember when he was young, him going 'what do I have to do to make money’,” Bakhtari said.
“He used to come to me to ask me about business.

“The thing is then he was a bit quieter, now he's a bit louder.

“Everything that comes out of his mouth is words of respect."

Carl Froch has no doubt that Anthony Joshua will remain unbeaten by seeing off Carlos Takam but is expecting it to be explosive, no matter how short it lasts.

As soon as Takam starts throwing big shots, Joshua will do exactly the same. It could be over 20 or 30 seconds after that, but they will be explosive. Joshua will meet any fire with fire that comes his way.

I thoroughly expect Anthony Joshua to do the job against Carlos Takam and do it in his usual spectacular way.

If I am honest, the outcome is a formality and he will win, but it is how he is going to win that is just as important.

Yes, Josh could outbox and outclass Takam and get some rounds in the bank, part of his learning curve, but I can't see that happening, for two reasons.

The first reason is Joshua likes to entertain. He wants to impress the 80,000 fans at the Principality Stadium or watching from home and he wants to fight.

The second reason is Takam himself. If I am honest, I am actually looking forward to seeing him fight 'Josh', rather than Kubrat Pulev. Not because he will cause him more problems or is better, but because he will give this a real go. And Joshua will do the same.

Takam knows this is his one big chance, his golden opportunity, so he is going to give it his all. I don't think for a moment he will go through the motions. Takam throws big hooks, he has 27 knockouts with a 69 per cent ratio, and that short-notice [of the call-up] should show his mentality and he should give it everything.
He is the IBF mandatory now and he will not get another chance. He has nothing to lose and the good thing is, as soon as he starts throwing big shots, Joshua will do exactly the same. It could be over 20 or 30 seconds after that, but they will be explosive. Joshua will meet any fire with fire that comes his way.
Joshua has looked vulnerable when he's been caught by Dillian Whyte and Wladimir Klitschko and there is every chance that he boxes smart, uses his height and reach, strength and size and just outclasses him.
Yes, Rob McCracken will be trying to pull on his reigns and tell him to take it slowly, stay calm and do the job, but there will be a moment when Joshua has Takam swinging big shots at him, he is just going to fight back. That is what Joshua does.

That is what he will do and do it in his usual style. He is still learning and even he admits that, and the late change is one of those things we all have to deal with. It's another box ticked, as long as he remains the consummate professional.

It might just be another day at the office for 'Josh' but it is the sort of day we all want to watch and be part of.
